Glitch Series
Glitch is a style or sub-aesthetic of sorts as I would place it. I believe it to be a useful tool as a visual and auditory medium in order to express different emotions and elements such as distortion, technology, confusion, isolation, etc. There is definitely an element of flexibility that using glitches as an artistic or creative property can be used beneficially. I have seen a predominant use of glitch work especially with new generations being more consumed by technology and hence more obsessed has cast a sense of popularity with glitch work that I find interesting. I am going to approach the concept of the glitch with the same tones it exudes, incorporating the aspects of distortion, confusion and isolation, trying to stray away from the technology aspect and more on what the effect shows outside of it.
For the execution of the project, while keeping in mind the aesthetic and overall theme, I decided to go solely for a visual medium. For my glitch project I used photography as my main means of showing off my work, after having pre planned photoshoots that would give out the overall emotion i'm trying to convey I took them online where I turned them into .txt formats and corrupted the code. By corrupting certain sections of the images I was able to have vertical lines distort the image and by interacting the code presented in the photographs you are able to see some overlap in short sections of the image through the horizontal lines of corrupted code. Finally, I brought it into photoshop and using a youtube tutorial ( Glitch Effect in Photoshop | 3 Amazing Techniques: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57GQ1rS0yU0&ab_channel=creatnprocess) I was able to add an additional layer of distortion to the already corrupted images.
Some of my challenges presented originally were regarding code corruption. Originally I take my images in a RAW .rw2 format which I later convert to a standard jpg; however; I didn’t take into account the size of the image which was around 20-30MB which does not seem like much when opening the code in a .txt file it was more than my computer could process. After bringing the image back to Lightroom and reexporting it in a smaller jpg I was able to utilize the code corruption to the fullest extent outside of latency caused by my computer’s ability to process it. For the method of distribution I just chose my own personal instagram account. Since I post my photography in that profile on social media I thought it was a fitting platform to be able to present my photography along with the element of code corruption and visual glitch that gives the images its appearance.
